The check engine light or CEL covers a lot of problems. One such problem is a crack in the exhaust manifold. LP & Sons Auto Care advises that the manifold may crack if you’re driving your automobile when the engine is too hot. In addition to the check engine light turning on, there will be a handful of things that will go wrong. We are going to list these things below for your information.
The Engine Performs Poorly
Aside from the check engine light warning, you may also start to have problems with your engine. If the exhaust manifold is cracked, the engine will start to perform poorly because the vehicle’s exhaust will leak into the engine and fill it up. The exhaust gases that fill the engine prevent engine combustion. Consequently, your engine will struggle to produce power and perform efficiently.
The Fuel Economy Is Reduced
The inefficiency caused by the leaking exhaust manifold is also going to reduce your vehicle’s fuel economy. This can be bad news if you are living paycheck-to-paycheck and cannot afford to head to the service station more often. In fact, having to replace the cracked manifold can also put a strain on your budget. Thankfully, we work with Snap! Finance at our shop.
You Hear Tapping or Hissing
If you are having problems with your engine performing poorly and burning through gasoline, take a good listen when you first start your automobile. You are listening for tapping or hissing noises coming from the engine. These sounds are the sound of exhaust escaping from the manifold or its gasket. Head straight to our shop if you hear either of these noises in your engine.
You Can Smell Burning Rubber
Aside from using your ears, you can also use your nose to detect whether you’ve got a leaking exhaust manifold. Usually, when the manifold leaks, the engine overheats and you can smell burning rubber coming from the engine. You will also be able to smell hot metal and burning plastic.
You Can Smell Your Car’s Exhaust
Finally, be careful if you think the exhaust manifold is leaking. It’s possible for the leaking exhaust to find its way into the passenger cabin. If you inhale the exhaust, you could become seriously ill. If you smell exhaust or gasoline while you are driving your vehicle, have it towed to our shop.
