You’ve Got a Rainbow of Fluids Underneath Your Car’s Hood

Automotive fluids come in a variety of colors so that they are easy to identify. They also come in a variety of colors simply because it’s the manufacturer’s choice. LP & Sons Auto Care can change your auto fluids when they need it. It’s important that you get these services done according to the schedule in your owner’s manual to get the most mileage and life out of your automobile.

Blue

You’ve got blue fluid under the hood in the form of windshield washing solution. You may also have blue fluid under the hood in the form of engine antifreeze/coolant. It’s rare for the latter to be in this color, but you won’t find windshield washing solution in any other color other than blue.

Brown

The brown fluid you will find underneath your hood is the motor oil. The brake fluid is also brown. The differential oil is brown, and if your transmission fluid is too old, it will turn brown. Usually, with the exception of transmission fluid, these fluids are light brown to start and turn dark brown as they age.

Clear

The only clear fluid you have underneath the hood is water. This is usually in the form of air conditioning system condensation. You may also see water dripping out of the tailpipe. It’s important to note that fuel can also look clear, so make sure to smell any clear fluid leaking from your automobile.

Green

The green fluid that is underneath your hood is antifreeze/coolant. This color is likely a bright neon green or a green-blue. If your automobile is leaking antifreeze/coolant, have it towed to our shop rather than drive it. The engine will overheat if the coolant level is too low due to the leak.

Orange

You may also have orange fluid underneath the hood in the form of antifreeze/coolant. You are going to discover as you keep reading that this automotive fluid comes in several different colors. The color underneath your hood depends on the brand and type of antifreeze/coolant your vehicle takes.

Red

You guessed it! The antifreeze/coolant can also be red. Other fluids that come in the color red are transmission fluid and power steering fluid. In some cases, the brake fluid in the brake system may also be red depending on the manufacturer.

Yellow

Finally, you may have yellow fluid underneath the hood in the form of antifreeze/coolant. As with green, the color of the yellow fluid is usually neon-yellow. It may also be yellow-green.
