Problems Caused by an Old Water Pump

If you are having any of the problems listed below, it’s probable that it’s time to replace the water pump and or SUV, truck, or car. Do not worry. We can do this at our shop and get you back on the road as quickly as possible. A water pump is part of your automobile’s cooling system. It is the part that circulates the coolant through the engine. It tends to go bad after about 100,000 miles.

Leaking Coolant

One of the first things that happens with an old water pump is it will start to leak coolant. Usually, the leak starts off slowly, and you will not be aware that the water pump is leaking. Rather than drip onto the garage floor, the coolant will pool around the water pump and start to corrode it. If you see that your water pump is corroded, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can replace it.

The corrosion will eat through the metal housing of the water pump and create a larger coolant leak. In this case, you will see coolant on your garage floor at the front of your engine. This is where the water pump is located. It is important to have the pump replaced as soon as possible to avoid your engine from overheating. There may not be enough coolant in the engine if the leak is a bad one.

Poor Circulation

Age also reduces the water pump’s ability to circulate coolant through the engine. Unfortunately, if the circulation is reduced or nonexistent, your engine will overheat. The water pump can break down completely and, as such, the circulation of coolant will break down. When this happens, you will see the temperature gauge needle on the dashboard rise into the red zone very quickly.

Growling/Grinding

We mentioned above that the water pump is located in the front of your engine. If you hear grinding or growling coming from this location, the water pump may be making the noise. These noises are indications that the water pump’s internal parts are grinding against each other.

Overheating

Finally, as we briefly touched upon above, an old water pump that is not working properly will make your engine overheat. The engine is going to overheat whenever you fire it up until you replace the water pump with a new one to restore the coolant circulation and level.

We would be happy to inspect your water pump and replace it if necessary. Call us today for an appointment.
