Symptoms of Exhaust System Problems

Let’s talk about the symptoms of exhaust system problems so you know what to look for in your automobile. If your car, SUV, or truck is having any of the following problems, head straight to our auto repair shop so we can inspect the exhaust system to diagnose the issue. Once we know what is wrong, we will give you a detailed estimate to repair it and perform the work once you approve it.

Roaring Engine

If your engine has started roaring loudly suddenly, especially when you accelerate, you may have become the victim of catalytic converter theft. This not only removes the catalytic converter but also damages the exhaust system. A damaged muffler can also cause a loud and roaring engine.

Tapping Engine

If your engine is tapping, you probably have a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. This being said, the manifold itself can also leak if it cracks. This exhaust system problem is a rare one, but it can happen if you drive an automobile that has a ton of mileage and years under its belt.

Lagging Engine

A lagging engine is a sign that your exhaust system is clogged. Consequently, the exhaust cannot make its way through the system and out the tailpipe. Rather, it backs up into the combustion chamber and affects the combustion production. This will cause your engine to lag and perform poorly.

Lagging Economy

The lagging engine will also reduce your fuel economy because it will consume more fuel. This may seem strange because the engine is performing so poorly. Unfortunately, even if the engine is struggling to run, it will use more fuel than when it is running efficiently.

Damaged Tailpipe

Damage to the tailpipe is an easy occurrence because of where the tailpipe is located. The tailpipe puts up with a lot of abuse, especially if you drive your automobile aggressively. The tailpipe can be damaged by road debris, when you hit curbs, or if you get into an automobile accident.

Exhaust Smells

Finally, it’s a good rule of thumb to avoid driving your automobile if you can smell the exhaust. It is much safer to have your vehicle towed to our shop because inhaling the exhaust is poisonous. You may be able to smell exhaust inside your passenger cabin if the exhaust system is leaking.

Give us a call today so we can schedule an appointment that works well with your day to inspect your exhaust system. If there are any problems, we will fix them.
