When Is Replacing My Car’s Engine Necessary?

You saved for years to buy your dream car. When you finally got your hands on it, it was the happiest day of your life. Don’t worry! We here at LP & Sons Auto Care can help you take care of your dream car, even if it needs a new engine. On average, automobile engines generally last about 150,000 miles. If they are well cared for, you may be able to get 200,000 to 300,000 miles out of your engine. At some point, however, you will need to replace the engine, particularly if any of the below issues rear their ugly heads.

Exhaust

Anytime your vehicle is spewing out excess exhaust, there’s something wrong with the engine. In some cases, the damage may be so extensive that the only solution is to replace the engine. The color of the exhaust smoke tells you what is being burned underneath the hood. Black exhaust is gasoline, blue exhaust is oil, and white exhaust is engine coolant. For these things to burn to the point that you have exhaust pouring out of your tailpipe, there must be a serious breach in your engine.

Knocking

Knocking can be caused by a number of things, some of which are easy to fix and others that require a new engine. For example, if your car needs gasoline with 91 octane, and you put 87 or 89 octane in the tank, this will affect your combustion chamber’s detonation, and you’ll end up with what’s called detonation knocks. This is easy to remedy. Broken rods are not. When the rods or rod bearings break, the knock that you hear is the pistons banging against the crankshaft walls.

Metal

When we say metal, we mean metal shavings in your oil. While your motor oil will get dirty between oil changes, it should never have metal shavings in it. If it does, this means that your engine is slowly dissolving into the motor oil. The metal shavings in the oil are shavings from your car parts. This is a surefire sign that you need a new engine. Your engine parts have degraded to the point that they are dissolving, and you cannot fix that.

Power

In some cases, you might not experience any of the signs above but your engine just cannot produce the power that it used to. This happens in extremely old cars that have hundreds of thousands of miles under their hood. The engine is worn out. That’s the simplest explanation. In this case, replacing the old with the new will restore your car’s power and give you another 100,000 miles out of it at the very least, provided you take care of it.

Finally, smoke pouring out from underneath the hood is never a good sign. Your vehicle is overheating to a temperature that can cause serious damage. Bring your automobile to LP & Sons Auto Care right away. We work hard to be the best auto service shop in DeLand, FL, and we can rebuild or replace your engine.
