Help! My Brakes Won’t Stop Squealing!

Sometimes when your brakes are wet, they will squeak or squeal until they dry. If they are squealing all the time, however, LP & Sons Auto Care warns that you have a problem with your brake system. You don’t want to take chances with your brakes. It’s important to have any possible issues inspected and repaired right away. Otherwise, you run the risk of being unable to stop your automobile and causing an accident. Let’s talk about the reasons why brakes squeal below.

You Need New Brake Pads

The most common reason why brakes squeal is that you need new brake pads. If you haven’t had your pads changed in several years, they are probably nearing the end of their life. Oftentimes, the brake pads have indicators in them that will make the brakes squeal when it’s time to change them. They don’t need the indicators to squeal when they are too low, however. They might squeal anyway.

You Need Pad Insulation Installed

Another problem that will make the brakes squeal every time you use them is no brake pad insulation. This insulation is installed in the factory when your vehicle is being manufactured, and it may not be replaced if an inexperienced mechanic replaces your brake pads. This insulation is designed specifically to prevent your brakes from squealing, so if you don’t have any, they will squeal loudly and proudly.

Your Brakes Are Too Hot

Another cause of brakes that squeal constantly is overheating brakes. If you notice a hot smell alongside the squealing sounds when you apply the brakes, pull your car over to safety and stop driving it. Your brakes are too hot and they could fail if you keep driving your automobile. When the brakes get too hot, the pads and rotors can no longer generate the friction needed to stop your car, truck, or utility vehicle.

Your Rotors Need to Be Cut

Finally, your rotor surface needs to be cut every 60,000 miles. As the pads press against the rotors when you apply the brakes, the surface is smoothed out slowly. Once the surface gets too smooth, your brakes will start squealing. If it has been 60,000 miles since you had your rotor surface cut, now is the time for the service. If it’s been 60,000 miles since you’ve had your brakes serviced, you definitely need to schedule an inspection.
