Your car, truck, or utility vehicle has three, four, or five filters. Two filters, the cabin and transmission filter, are not found on every automobile. Vehicles without a cabin filter have permanent netting to purify the passenger cabin air; some vehicles also don’t have a transmission filter. LP & Sons Auto Care is going to list the five automotive filters below and tell you what they do. We are also going to give you general recommendations for when these filters should be changed. The specific recommendation for each filter change can be found in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
Air
All cars, trucks, and utility vehicles have air filters. The air filter cleans the air that flows into the engine from the outside. The engine uses this air in the combustion chamber for combustion. The air filter should be changed once a year without fail to keep your engine performance what it should be. If you drive more than 12,000 miles in one year, change the air filter then.
Cabin
As we mentioned above, your vehicle may or may not have a cabin air filter. If it does, the general recommendation to change it is every 30,000 miles. This being said, many people prefer to change their cabin filter is sooner than that to ensure they always have fresh air blowing into the passenger cabin. You can keep an eye on your cabin filter to see when it gets dirty.
Fuel
All automobiles have fuel filters. This filter is responsible for purifying the fuel that is in the tank. In fact, clean fuel is so important that the fuel system runs the diesel fuel or gasoline through the filter twice. The fuel filter needs to be changed every two years. If you drive more than 30,000 miles before the two years are up, have the fuel filter changed then.
Oil
You don’t need to worry about the oil filter because it gets changed automatically when you have your oil changed, so if you are faithful about that, you’ve always got a clean oil filter. A clean oil filter is crucial to the health of your engine. The oil filter cleans away all of the dirt and debris that the oil picks up as it circulates through the engine.
Transmission
Finally, check your owner’s manual to see if your automobile has a transmission filter. If it does, the general recommendation is to change it when you change the transmission fluid, which is every 30,000 miles.
