We get it here at LP & Sons Auto Care. Strange noises coming from the engine can be frightening. You don’t know what’s wrong, and you don’t know if it’s safe to continue to drive your automobile. Bring your car, truck, or UV to our shop so we can inspect the engine to determine what is causing the noise. Once we know what the problem is, we will give you a detailed estimate to repair it.

Grinding

It’s probably a good idea to have your automobile towed to our shop if the engine is grinding. This usually points to an oil delivery problem. You may not have enough oil in the engine, or the oil pressure may be too low. Either way, operating the vehicle can damage the engine beyond repair.

Knocking

Another thing that can indicate that the engine is being damaged is a knocking sound coming from it. This could be a sign that the rod bearings are worn in the cylinder block. Because they are worn, they will jiggle the rods that move the pistons up and down inside the cylinders. This can cause damage to the cylinder walls. Your engine may also knock if there is a fuel detonation problem.

Popping

Popping usually points to an issue with the exhaust system. For example, the catalytic converter may pop if it gets clogged by carbon and sulfur deposits. In addition, the exhaust may make a popping or tapping sound if it is leaking out of a cracked exhaust manifold or manifold gasket.

Roaring

If your engine is roaring or rumbling like a racecar, you probably have a hole in the muffler. Unfortunately, this loud sound can also be a sign that somebody took it upon themselves to help themselves to your catalytic converter from underneath the automobile.

Sizzling

If your engine is sizzling and reminding you of your favorite Saturday morning breakfast, it’s possible that fluid is leaking onto hot engine parts. You could damage your engine if you keep driving it depending on which fluid is leaking. For example, you don’t want to drive the automobile if there is an oil leak.

Squealing

Finally, the engine may squeal if the accessory belt needs to be tightened or replaced. It can also squeal if the belt’s tensioner needs to be replaced.
